GEAR FOR HOME STUDIO

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

Embarking on a journey of an independent artist takes commitment, patience, and guidance. For me, starting my home studio created a rush of inspiration and creative spark. These are some of the gear that I used to start my studio.

First things first, I recommend you get a good computer with great processing. Most apple enthusiasts recommend a MAC computer for recording however it is based on preference. I personally use a windows HP with 64gb of ram and a powerful processor, it is a gaming PC.

The first Item I invested in was a good microphone suited for my voice and style of music. I choose the AKG C214

AKG C214 Large diaphragm studio microphone based on C414 capsule. Cardioid only.

To record your new mic into your computer you must have an interface. I recommend starting with something simple like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface with Pro Tools with Knox Pop Filter and XLR Cable Bundle .

I use PreSonus Audio Electronics Multitrack Recording Software (Studio One 4 Professional/Boxed) to record my vocals. One thing I quickly discovered as I compared my mixes to professional recordings was my vocal sounded thin. So I then added a microphone preamplifier this one in particular PreSonus Studio Channel Vacuum-Tube Channel Strip made my vocals sound full and professional. I bypass the EQ on the pre-amp and EQ my vocals on my Digital workstation instead. Make you don't use phantom power on your interface and your preamplifier it will destroy your microphone!

You should also treat your room with studio foam to soundproof you recording area I use Auralex Acoustics Studiofoam Wedges Acoustic Absorption Foam, 2" x 24" x 24"

I produce my music as well. I recommend FL Studio 20 Image Line Signature Bundle (Boxed) with Microfiber and 1 Year Everything Music Extended Warranty It is pretty simple and there is a multitude of information and tutorials on YouTube I recommend checking out Busy Works Beats if you are into rap or R&B. I also use the MPC it is a bit more advanced but I love it and I have developed a cool workflow.

Once you start making hits at your home studio you will have to showcase your talent. I remember completely losing my voice for the first time in my life a week before a major show that had at least 2,000 people in attendance. I did a lot of research to see what I could do to regain my voice and Vocal Eze, Vocal Herbal Throat Spray saved me.

You also need to decorate your space that just helps the creative vibe. I like outer space It helps me realize the vastness of God's creation Black Light Reactive Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud Space Poster Marq BL-18P | Lightweight & Durable Plastic Flourescent Blacklight UV Fixture (18 Inches)
